Montevideo is the most expensive South American city to live in, according to a consulting firm.
Every year, the consulting firm Mercer carries out a ranking of the cost of living for international workers, taking into account various variables such as inflation and the exchange rate, economic and geopolitical volatility, local and regional conflicts and the price of services such as housing, education and others.
This measurement is carried out to guide companies that must send employees from local headquarters to other areas of the planet.
According to the consultancy, “the complete classification serves as a valuable compass that provides guidance through the intricate landscape of living expenses in cities around the world.”
According to this report, in higher-ranking cities, such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Zurich, real estate markets, the price of transportation and high costs of living have greater influence.
The most expensive cities in the world are Hong Kong, Singapore, Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, New York, London, Nassau and Los Angeles, while the least expensive are Abuja, Lagos, Islamabad, Bishkek, Karachi, Blantyre, Dushanbe , Durban, Windhoek and Havana.
In the region, Montevideo occupies 42nd place in the global ranking and is the most expensive in South America, followed by Buenos Aires (77) and Sao Paulo (124).
