Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna has announced a proposal to declare August 4 as “Carlos Yulo Day.” In an interview with DWPM Radyo 630, Mayor Lacuna shared that the local government aims to have the proposal approved by August 15.
The date of August 4 was selected in honor of Yulo’s first gold medal victory in the men’s gymnastics floor exercise. The following day, he secured his second gold medal in the vault final.
If approved, August 4 will become a working holiday in the city of Manila. Carlos Yulo is also set to receive a P2 million incentive from the local government on August 19, during which the resolution is expected to be presented and awarded.
In addition, the Manila LGU awarded P500,000 to Tondo-born EJ Obiena. Mayor Lacuna emphasized that the achievements of both Yulo and Obiena could lead to significant investments in the sports sector, highlighting the need for higher allowances for athletes during training, better equipment, and more accessible training facilities not just in the National Capital Region, but in strategic locations across the country.
Previously, Mayor Lacuna led the distribution of cash incentives to the winners of the Batang Pinoy and the Philippine National Games held in Cebu City. A total of 67 young athletes received cash rewards for representing Manila in these tournaments, including Yulo’s younger siblings, Karl Jahrel Eldrew and Eliza Andriel Yulo, who won five and two gold medals, respectively.
