MANILA, Philippines—Former Vice President Leni Robredo has decided not to run for senator in the 2025 midterm elections.
In an interview with local reporters in Naga City, Camarines Sur, Robredo confirmed she had informed the Liberal Party (LP) of her decision.
“I have closed that door, which is why I informed LP. I told them I would not run for the Senate and that my preference is to run for mayor of Naga,” she explained.
Robredo’s intention to run for the Naga mayoral race — a position once held by her late husband, former Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo — was first disclosed by LP President and Albay 1st District Rep. Edcel Lagman. Lagman mentioned this during an interview at the Batasang Pambansa complex after being asked about the possibility of Robredo being nominated for the vacant Education Secretary post.
Robredo clarified she was unsure if Lagman’s statement was official but noted that the context of his interview was about a possible offer for her to become Education Secretary.
“I do not know if that was an official statement, but the context of the interview with Congressman Edcel Lagman was about a supposed offer for Atty. Leni to be the Education Secretary. That’s my understanding. But when I read the headlines, it seemed my actions were preempted,” she explained.
“Everyone knows that my preferred option is to be Naga’s mayor. But I do not want to make an official announcement while I have not yet tied loose ends,” Robredo added.
