The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) are very serious to stop the plan of restoring the death penalty in the country. Presumptive president-elect Rodrigo Duterte want to push harder the revival of death penalty.

According to Duterte, he will ask the lawmakers to restore the death penalty by hanging once he started working as ‘President of the Philippines.

But Archbishop-emeritus Oscar Cruz told reporters that Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines will oppose Duterte’s proposal.

Tatayuan iyan, (Of course we are opposing that, specially the CBCP. The church will not just seat down the issue, we stand to that),”

Ang kasalukuyang posisyon ng [CHR] ay iyong death penalty is contrary to human dignity and human rights.”

Gascon explained why and said, “Sa isang weak justice system na maraming loophole, madalas ang resulta ay may mga napapatawan ng capital punishment ay maaaring later on ay mapatunayan na hindi pala nagkasala.”

And according to Gascon, death penalty is not an effective deterrent to crime and it has been proven as he cited that the global trend was for the abolition of the death penalty.

He added that the country’s criminal justice system’s intention is to rehabilitate convicts.
