Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner Patricia Licuanan will be resigning from her post soon after it became clear that President-elect Rodrigo Duterte prefers that his old college professor have the job, Politiko has learned.
Licuanan decided to resign instead of suffering the embarrassment of having Duterte ask her to “give way” to Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) professor Jose David Lapuz.
To Licuanan, Duterte’s decision to designate Lapuz as CHED chair only means he doesn’t like her in his administration.
“Ayaw sa akin ni Digong,” she was quoted as saying.
Licuanan’s term will end in 2018.
Earlier this week, Ateneo de Davao University president Fr. Joel Tabora, SJ said Duterte named Lapuz as CHED chair in a meeting at the so-called “Malacañang of the South” in Panacan, Davao City.
Tabora hinted in an interview with inquirer.net that Duterte might ask Licuanan to resign based on Commission on Audit’s report on the CHED’s failure to spend P1.2 billion allotted for poor students due to “internal control weaknesses” in processing and releasing allowances.
