Austria consular office opens in Davao

FOLLOWING other nations’ interest in Davao City, a country in Central Europe opened its honorary consular office here to widen economic relations and strengthen partnership with the city as well as the island of Mindanao.

Speaking in a media interview after the formal inauguration of the office Friday, the event’s guest-of honor Austrian Ambassador Josef Mullner shared a thought on the essence of putting up an office in Davao.

“We consider Davao as the Philippines’ third most important city; we already have representatives in Manila and Cebu years back, now is the time for Davao,” Muller said.

Austria is more than willing to improve investments with the Philippines under the incoming administration, he added.

Muller also cited that their people have already sent a letter of request for an appointment to the Chief-of-Staff of the incoming President Rodrigo Duterte.

“We are hoping that he could see us tonight or tomorrow for the meeting so we could discuss the details of our plans,” he said.

There are thousands of Austrians that were registered in The Embassy of Austria in the Philippines. In Mindanao, there is an estimate of 70 Austrian citizens- not counting the hundreds who are here as tourists.

Davao-based Austrian Dr. Peter Faistauer will serve as the honorary consul for Mindanao.

Muller said that Faistauer’s main responsibility is to take care if the Austrians residing here as well as look over the economic exchange between the two countries.

The honorary consular office is located at the second floor of The Shoppes commercial building along Diversion Road, Davao City.
